In a milestone moment for the community of Thanlyin Township, Clear Yangon officially opened the doors of a newly constructed school building — a project two years in the making. The facility now provides a safe, modern learning environment for over 300 primary school students who previously studied in a deteriorating structure prone to flooding during monsoon season.
The project was made possible through a combination of donor contributions, local government partnership, and the dedication of more than 80 community volunteers who contributed labour and materials throughout the construction process. Local families played an active role at every stage — from site preparation to interior finishing — fostering a genuine sense of ownership over the new facility.
"When I walked into the new classroom for the first time, I saw my students' faces light up. These children deserve a place where they can truly focus and grow."
The new building includes six classrooms, a small library corner stocked with donated books and learning materials, and gender-separated sanitation facilities. Solar panels installed on the roof provide reliable electricity for lighting and a computer station, giving students access to digital learning for the first time.
At the opening ceremony, attended by local officials, community elders, and parents, Clear Yangon's executive director reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to education as a cornerstone of long-term community development. "Access to quality education is not a privilege — it is a right," she said. "This building is a statement that these children matter and that their futures are worth investing in."
Construction is already underway on a second phase that will add a multipurpose hall and a dedicated teacher preparation room. Clear Yangon plans to replicate this model in three additional townships by the end of the year, with site assessments already completed in Hlegu and Shwe Pyi Thar.
